Pandemic Upends Labor Market
The latest COVID-19 pandemic wave, driven by the more infectious omicron variant, has underscored the changes in Puerto Rico’s labor market that have become a challenge to business owners as well as workers.
Employees looking to protect themselves from the virus and seeking better working conditions have had the upper hand in negotiations with employers,who have had to offer greater benefits and increase wages to attract and retain workers.
Wilo Benet, owner of the three-year-old Wilo Eatery & Bar at San Patricio Village, has seen his business affected by this situation. Last month, he suspended delivery service for customized diet-conscious cuisine and snacks and closed one of his dining rooms after several employees left their jobs.
